Crime Scene Detective introduces students to fictitious crimes that set the stage for their own exploration of surrounding “crime scene” areas, bagging and tagging what might be the “evidence” to help crack the case. The Crime Scene Detective Kit has been designed to have students use their observation skills to: investigate the scene; gather evidence; provide documentation using notes, sketches and interviews; analyze the collected data; draw conclusions; and solve the crimes.
In their quest, students use reading, writing, math and science in engaging hands-on activities geared to help them solve the crime. They experience working in teams; they discover that there might be multiple solutions to any particular crime situation, and they gain an understanding of how each factor affects the outcome of the case. These learning experiences, based on their hands-on crime scene explorations, gathering and inspecting data, and team discussions, contribute to a framework for problem solving that students can use well into their future.
